Drain a CH system

If you have ever had a fault with your heating system it is quite disconcerting and you can feel quite helpless as usually when you turn the thermostat it just starts. So when it doesn’t, something has to be done. With a heating system it usually means that you must drain all the water out of it to find the problem as a flood is yet another problem you don’t need. If you cant do this, always contact a registered professional. If you do it yourself there are a few pointers below:

1). You first action is to turn the system off completely at the boiler and allow the whole system to cool down. Switch off the boiler so the pump will not run and wait until the water starts to cool. Turn off the supply to you feed and expansion tank.

2). Go into the loft space and, using a wood batten with a cord tied in the middle, lay it across the top of the tank and tie the cord to the float valve in the up (closed) position. Push a flexi hose onto the drain of the tank and feed the hose out and away to a main drain. Always make sure the flow is at least level and never uphill as this will stop the flow. Now open the valve and allow the draining to begin, you may need some cloths just in case. A Ladbroke Grove Plumber carries all the correct tools to carry out this job.

3). Keep checking the hose and connections for leaks.

4). Once the repair has been done close the system up again and remove the cord and batten and turn on the main stopcock. You now need to bleed all the radiators in the house and don’t forget the pump as air may have got into it. Tidy up and the job is done.
